Accommodations and Exceptions

Special access can be given to one or more students for a quiz, e.g. a longer time limit or a unique start and/or end date for instructor approved exceptions. Instructors can provide Special Access in two ways.

From the Classlist, instructors can set term-long Special Access accommodations for students. In situations of unrepeated accommodations, instructors can set individual quizzes to have Special Access as well.

Assignments also allow for accommodations and exceptions through the use of Special Access, but options are limited to changing the Start, End, and Due dates for specific students.

Add Term-Long Special Access

When students have time-extending accommodations that will span the duration of the course, instructors can set it so each student has Special Access for quizzes throughout the semester using the Classlist.

  1. Go to the Classlist.

  2. Scroll down and navigate to the student for whom to grant Special Access.

  3. Select the drop-down arrow next to the student.

  4. Select Edit Accommodations.

  5. A list of settings for quiz accommodations will open. To grant a student more time on quizzes, select Modify Time Limit.

  6. Then, select one of the following:

    • To grant the student a multiplier of the original quiz time (e.g. 1.5x), select the radio button under "Multiplier of original quiz time". Then, enter the multiplier in the "times" field.

    • To grant the student a set amount of additional time, select the radio button under "Extra time" and enter the time in minutes.

  7. Select Save.

  8. An icon will appear next to the student in the Classlist to indicate special access.

Note: The accommodations will automatically occur for the student for every quiz. The quiz itself will not show a key icon to indicate that there is Special Access set on the quiz. However, the accommodations can be viewed within the quiz when following the directions to Add Special Access to an Individual Quiz below.

Add Special Access to an Individual Quiz

For instances in which accommodations must be made only once, or for reasons beyond extending the time-limit, Special Access can be granted within the quiz restrictions.

  1. Go to the Quizzes area in the course site.

  2. Select the drop-down arrow next to the quiz to be edited, and select “Edit

  3. Select the Availability Dates & Conditions tab.

  4. Under "Special Access" select Manage Special Access. Make sure the "Allow selected users special access to this quiz" button is selected. This is the default option and sets the quiz so every student can access it, while some have special accommodations.

  5. Select Add Users to Special Access.

  6. Set the special access that to be granted:

  • To allow individual students earlier access to the quiz, check the box for "Has Start Date." Then, change the start date.

  • To allow individual students later access to the Quiz, check the box for "Has End Date." Then, change the end date.

  • To allow individual students more time to take a quiz, check the box for "Recommend time limit" or "Enforced time limit," and enter a number in the “minute(s)” field.

  • To allow individual students a different number of attempts in the quiz, check the box for "Override attempts allow" and choose a number from the dropdown menu below.  Then select Apply.

  1. Check the box next to the name of the student(s) who will have special access to the quiz.

  2. Select Save.

  3. Select Save and Close.
