Completion (click) tracking
Completion tracking allows instructors to see which pieces of Content students have visited in a course. It is also visible to students and thus allows them to monitor where they’ve been in a course.
Items added to the Content area (namely Pages but also uploaded files and some third-party tools) include options for completion tracking, the results of which are visible in the Class Progress tool.
Note that any type of Content folder (labeled as Unit, Lesson, or Folder in Brightspace) cannot have completion tracking.
Click tracking data can be useful in aggregate when evaluating course material and access, but can be unreliable at the individual user level and should never be used as a way to police or evaluate students.

Completion requirements
The default setting and behaviour is that a Content item is completed Automatically when opened, which is not necessarily meaningful information as there are many ways different students (perhaps using different types of devices) may meet that criteria.
In general:
Uploaded files are marked complete when a student views them.
Documents created in D2L (i.e., HTML Pages) are marked complete when a student views them.
Links are marked complete when a student views them.
Discussions are marked complete after a student first posts. If the discussion assignment requires students to post more than once, select manual completion tracking.
Submission folders are marked complete after one submission.
Quizzes are marked complete after one attempt is submitted.
Surveys are marked complete when a student submits a response.
Enable manual completion
Manual completion tracking can be enabled by editing a Content item (through the three dots in the top-right) and then selecting Manually by learner.
Student view
If the Manually by learner option has been enabled, students will see a blue Mark as Complete button at the bottom edge of each page. This will fade to a lighter shade once clicked.
The default option of Automatically when opened does not display to students in any way.
