Recommended Practices for Taking a Quiz in Brightspace

WARNING: Closing a quiz mid-attempt will not stop the timer.

  1. Only have one tab open of Brightspace.  Multiple tabs means that saving is not consistent and creates issues with test submissions.  Multiple tabs of the same quiz could also come into conflict with academic integrity policies.

  2. Device and Browser recommendations: Ensure you have enough battery life on your device or be plugged into a power source.   Opening a new session of Brightspace in a new browser window to take the quiz will ensure that browser cache issues are minimized.

  3. Taking the test on a mobile device: be sure you understand how to access the quiz via a smart phone or other mobile device (Download and enter the Pulse app > Enter the relevant course > click on the three dots at the top right of the screen > “Launch Course Homepage” > select Quizzes from the three horizontal line menu at the top left corner of the screen > select the correct quiz).   It is highly recommended that you have a computer to take the quiz on as a back-up to taking it on a mobile device.

  4. Be sure to select “Submit” once you have completed the quiz.  Failing to select submit will result in a quiz that is not registered as complete.

  5. Set aside time. Take the time to go into the quiz and complete it as your only task. Multitasking can lead to issues arising with the proper submission of quizzes because timeouts and other disruptions can occur within the system.

  6. Be sure to understand your instructor’s ideas about academic integrity and how they understand the quiz is to be taken.  Adhere to guidelines provided by the instructor about collaborative learning and whether it is an open-book or closed-book quiz.

  7. Do not use the “Back” button in your browser.  Navigate the quiz from within the quiz.  There will be times your instructor permits a table of contents or access to previous questions, other times they will not.  The settings in the quiz itself should identify whether you can return to previous questions or not.

  8. Be sure to clarify the quiz settings before starting the quiz and to read the quiz details completely at the start of your quiz attempt. If you encounter difficulties during your quiz, take screen shots of any error messages. Include as much information as possible in the screen shot including the date and time, the browser tool bar, and the entire browser window. Email your instructor the with details of your quiz issue and include the screenshot so your instructor has as much information as possible.

  9.  Answer each question. As you complete the question, the answer will automatically save. You can see which questions have saved answers in the Questions section of the quiz's left panel. You can also click the question number in the quiz's left panel to go back to the question (if the instructor allowed this). Note: Text input questions autosave every 60 seconds, and HTML-enabled questions save when the mouse cursor is clicked outside the quiz response input area
