Non-YuJa video in Brightspace

Brightspace does have a built-in video player, although it has several flaws and is inferior to YuJa in just about every way. It is highly recommended to use YuJa instead, although there may be situations where that is deemed unnecessary or impractical.

Videos added directly (as opposed to embedded into an HTML page) will appear with their file name in the Content area. This is most likely achieved in situations where a video file has been dragged-and-dropped or uploaded through the Add Existing options (both of which are ideal workflows for adding other file types).

YuJa provides a vastly superior experience for both the uploader (namely in hosting, editing, and file management) and students (for playback, captions, and viewing options). Reference our guides on using YuJa for assistance in getting started.

Using the Brightspace video player

The Brightspace video player will be encountered in the Content area when a video file is uploaded through the Add Existing options or dragged-and-dropped.

Identifying the Brightspace video player

The video player itself may be difficult to distinguish from YuJa. The latter features a few more buttons, namely the closed captions toggle.

Adding and editing captions with the Brightspace video player

Videos uploaded using the Brightspace video tool will not present many options. While it would be ideal to re-upload using YuJa, captions can be added to the Brightspace player through the Advanced Editing options.

Advanced Editing and captioning can only accessed by the individual who uploaded the video.

  1. Find the three dots and Edit.

  2. Click Advanced Editing (clickable for the video owner).

  3. Go to Closed Captions [1] and click Auto-Generate [2]. Captions will take some time (depending on video length) to generate, but can be edited once they appear [3].
