Media Library

The Media Library is a file repository that students can access within Brightspace. It is attached to each user account and is not connected with individual course sites.

Any video or audio note created with Brightspace is automatically added to the user’s Media Library. This will most likely happen when using Insert Stuff when doing submitting video assignments. Previously submitted files can be accessed through the Media Library.

All members of the Brock community have access to the Microsoft Office 365 email and productivity tool suite. The suite includes OneDrive, which is the recommend method of file sharing and storage and stores all account-linked files from tools like Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

The Media Library is separate from the YuJa Media Library which is primarily an instructor-facing video management tool.

Where is the Media Library?

Click the Admin Tools cog in the top right of any Brightspace page and select Media Library.

How do I add files to the Media Library?

Files can be uploaded from a computer or created using the Add button. Use Upload File to upload locally stored files and Record Webcam to record and upload video and/or audio.

Record Webcam

Brightspace requires permission to access a device microphone and/or camera and will prompt if needed. This must be enabled to use the recording options.

The Record Webcam window provides simple options to start recording via the New Recording button (note the option for Audio only) and the Next button which is used to upload once recording is complete.

Can I edit files in the Media Library?

Basic editing options are available for items created and uploaded within Brightspace via the ellipses (…) button on the right of the page. There are options to Preview, Download, Edit, Rename, change Description, and Delete files.

When files are deleted, they are sent to the Recycle Bin and permanently deleted after 90 days.

Editing audio and video files

Uploaded files can be edited directly in Brightspace. Click on the ellipsis (…) and then Edit.

  • Optimize for Streaming will improve the streaming quality options (recommended).

  • Table of Contents can be used to set “chapters” to help viewers skip to certain sections of the video.

  • Auto-Generate, Upload, or Create Closed Captions (in the Closed Captions tab) will add closed captions or allow you to edit the auto-generated ones. This is highly recommended to improve accessibility.

  • Seek/Cut are options for trimming the playback length itself. These options are simplified and a proper video editor is recommended for serious editing work.

Files are saved as drafts while being edited and can be published by clicking Finish.
