Instructors can annotate student work directly within the Assignments tool using the Annotation tools feature. The Annotation toolbar will appear on the file view at the top of the document. By default this feature is turned on however instructors can alter this via the assignment settings.

The Annotation tool bar allows instructors to add detailed online and inline feedback for student file submissions. Features of the Annotation tool include highlighting, striking through, and underlining. Instructors can also add comments or draw free hand on the assignment.

Using the Annotation Features

To access the annotation toolbar on an assignment:

  1. On assignment submission page, click on a student’s assignment.

  2. If there are multiple files. Select the file you’d like to grade. When the page loads the annotation tool bar will automatically load on the grade view.

  3. Choose one of the many options to leave inline contextual feedback for students:

    1. Text Highlighting

      1. Easily mark up text on a document via an intuitive highlight menu with support for highlighting, strikethrough, and underlining.

    2. Freehand Drawing

      1. Draw anywhere on a document. Move and resize, and change appearance — including color, thickness, and opacity.

    3. Text Annotation

      1. Add text anywhere on a document. Move and resize, and change appearance — including font, size, alignment, and color.

    4. Note Annotation

      1. Add longer comments, which can be collapsed or expanded, to a document. Change appearance with a variety of shapes and colors.

    5. Sidebar

      1. Choose from three sidebar options — Thumbnails, Outline, or Bookmarks — to get an overview of the content in a document. Show and hide the sidebar at any time, resize it, or expand it into a full gallery view.
