In this article, CPI offers a few different locations where instructors and staff can find accessibility information pertaining directly to using Brightspace, as well as larger accessibility principles shared by the Brock University Community. Brightspace offers multiple ways to present information, as well as a variety of ways for students to submit their work. The resources below will help instructors formulate materials that work towards the goal of multi-modality and accessibility.

Building Accessible Content in Brightspace (by Kyle Mackie)

Building Accessible Content in Brightspace is a collection of materials created in Brightspace by Kyle Mackie. Kyle is a consultant with many years of experience in teaching, learning, and technology. His insights into Brightspace’s various tools and how they can be used to create accessible content are open to staff and faculty members.

To gain access to the Building Accessible Content in Brightspace materials, please follow the link below to the Brightspace at Brock site, then click Enroll in Course. The course will then be accessible via the course selector/Brightspace homepage, the materials can be found in the Content area. The Brightspace at Brock site offers helpful materials on many different aspects of Brightspace for instructors.

Below is a link to Kyle’s own Building Accessible Content in Brightspace site, it contains the same materials as the Brightspace at Brock site.

Centre for Pedagogical Innovation - Accessibility

The Centre for Pedagogical Innovation (CPI) offers many resources to help instructors with accessible curriculum design. Additionally, CPI offers explanations and testaments behind the benefits of accessible learning.

The resources are found through CPI’s Accessibility section of their website, linked below. If instructors wish to meet to discuss designing an accessible curriculum, they can reach out to cpi@brocku.ca.

AODA and Human Rights Training

Mandatory for faculty and staff, the AODA and Human Rights Training Brightspace site continues to offer valuable resources and insights into various accessibility and human rights concerns to consider when developing course materials. Should instructors wish to easily access the resources offered, or look over certain areas of importance, it can be done easily from the Brightspace site.

Most staff/faculty should already have access to the AODA and Human Rights Training site, but if they want a quick link or otherwise need to enroll, please follow the link below, then click Enroll in Course(/Open Course). The course will then be accessible via the course selector/Brightspace homepage.

Brocku Human Rights and Equity - Accessibility

The Human Rights and Equity area of Brock University’s website can be useful in providing general accessibility principles to keep in mind when building up a course site. A helpful excerpt from the site can be found below:

How can you make your teaching and learning more accessible? Applying three basic principles in your curriculum design, content and delivery can make your course more accessible.
These principles are:

  • Provide Multiple Means of Representation (the “what” of learning)

  • Provide Multiple Means of Action and Expression (the “how” of learning)

  • Provide Multiple Means of Engagement (the “why” of learning)
