Editing Incorrect Quiz Questions

Editing Incorrect Quiz Questions

Instructors may encounter situations where they discover that a question on a live or previously submitted Brightspace quiz needs editing, this can either be due to how the question was worded or perhaps if the wrong multiple choice option is selected as the correct answer.

The steps below outline a process that must be followed if an instructor wishes to update a quiz question for a quiz that is currently being taken or was already submitted.

Editing a Quiz Question

Quiz questions can be edited in two different ways depending upon where they were originally created. If they were created in the Question Library, then it is best to edit them there. If they were created directly within the quiz, then the quiz will need to be edited to change them.

Editing a quiz question will not retroactively update marking for students who already attempted a quiz with an incorrect question. Marks for those questions will need to be updated.

Editing a Question in the Question Library

  1. Go to Quizzes on the navbar. Select the Question Library tab.

  2. Navigate to the quiz question that needs editing. It may be inside a section depending on how the Question Library was originally organized.

  3. Select the question text to enter the question editor.

  4. Edit the question as needed, then Save.

Editing a Question in the Quiz

  1. Go to Quizzes on the navbar. Select the drop-down arrow next to the quiz containing the question and select Edit.

  2. In the Questions section of the editor, select the question that needs editing.

  3. Edit the question as needed, then Save. Select Save once more to leave the quiz editor.

Updating Marks for a Quiz Question

The following instructions outline how to provide marks to students on quiz questions that were created incorrectly.

  1. Go to Quizzes on the navbar. Select the drop-down arrow next to the quiz with the question that needs editing and select Grade.

  2. Navigate to the Questions tab.

The Grade Quiz area is set to the Users tab by default, Questions must be selected.
  1. Select the Update all attempts radial, then choose the question to be edited from the list of quiz questions.

If the question was edited in the Question Library after being added to the quiz (to update the question for future attempts), the old version of the question will appear at the bottom of the list under Questions that are not in the quiz anymore. This version of the question still must be updated if it was incorrect to account for the students who would have taken the quiz when that question was still in it.

  1. Upon selecting a question, there are two options:

    1. Choose to give all students who had that question points. This is done by selecting Give to all attempts _____ points. Then fill in the blank with the correct points you would like to assign for this question.

    2. Choose to give students who provided a certain answer to that question points. This is done by selecting Give to attempts with answer _____ _____ points. Then choose the specific answer that students selected from the dropdown and fill in the blank with the points you would like associated with those who submitted that specific answer.

  2. Provide a comment explaining to the students what you have done if you so wish, then select Save. This will update the student’s attempts with the changes provided.
